The choice of sculptor José Aurélio

When Jorge Leitão joined Leitão & Irmão, fulfilling a family mission already in the 6th generation, during a particularly demanding socio-economic period after the 25th of April. Jorge Leitão invited José Aurélio to create a jewellery collection.

At the time, the sculptor was on the rise and the collaboration made perfect sense for both brands - Portuguese, artistic and young.

To commemorate two centuries, Jorge Leitão once again invites the sculptor to celebrate another remarkable moment at the head of Casa Leitão.

José Manuel Aurélio

Sculptor's Biography

He stands out for his sculptural work integrated into the avant-garde movement, working essentially with materials such as stone, wood or bronze in isolation or in combination.

It presents us with a minimalist aesthetic language that tends towards geometry.

He has realised numerous works in public spaces, participating in collective art shows since 1957 and exhibiting individually for the first time in 1958, having held a large number of exhibitions from that date onwards. Represented in several international and national works.

In 2006, José Aurélio was honoured by the President of the Portuguese Republic with the rank of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.

In addition to his sculptural base, he has developed new forms of expression in the field of medals, until in 2016 he emerged as the author of a two-euro coin in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Tagus Bridge.

José Aurélio, is considered one of the great contemporary Portuguese artists.
