SILVER IN GENERAL

Maintenance and cleaning tips. They will keep your silver as new for tens of years, acquiring the patine that so enhances works of art. It should be noted that new pieces undergo a manual manufacturing process involving temperatures of around 1000 degrees Celsius. Oxidation of new silver pieces is fast and tends to diminish with each cleaning. It is possible and normal that blemishes appear; these are easily removed with any commercial silver polish, including the Leitão & Irmão silver polish delivered when the piece is bought. Do not use cleaning products where the piece is entirely immersed in a liquid. It may alter the different brightness of the hand-polishing. SILVER

The pieces can and should be cleaned without restriction using any silver polish of repute. Cleaning is beneficial to silver and does not wear or harm it in any way. A Leitão & Irmão silver polish is delivered with each new piece. Alternatively, any commercial silver polish may be used. Wet cotton wool with the product, spreading it over the piece, then polish off with a clean, dry soft cloth. Take special care with the polished surfaces of the piece. A dirty cloth can scratch it, but this can be repaired, however. After the silver is cleaned a few times, polishing once or twice a year is enough.

SILVER GILT

Clean with a cloth moistened with alcohol.

 

JEWELLERY IN GENERAL

Maintaining a jewel, particularly cleaning it, can and should be done at home. Jewels are washed in water. The main precaution is never to pour the water away without first checking that no stone is missing from the jewel you have cleaned. If a stone is missing it will be at the bottom of the bowl in which you washed the jewel. If you are sure no stone is missing you can throw the water away and fill the bowl with clean ware for the final rinse. Always keep your jewels separate, one by one, in a soft cloth bag or the original case, for example. Do not keep jewels in contact with each other. The following list details the essential care that your jewellery requires, depending on the gems. For jewellery with stones of different types, choose the care recommended for the most sensitive.

DIAMONDS

Wash with a soft toothbrush in warm water and soap. Rinse well in water and dry with a clean cloth.

SAPPHIRES AND RUBIES

Wash with a soft toothbrush in warm water and soap. Rinse well in water and dry with a clean cloth.

EMERALDS

Wash with a soft toothbrush in warm water and soap. Rinse well in warm water and dry with a clean cloth. Avoid alcohol, direct contact with perfumes, excessive heat, knocks and contact with hard materials. Never keep a jewel with emeralds in contact with other jewels. Always keep the piece in a small bag or in the original case. Emeralds are fragile.

AQUAMARINE

Wash with a soft toothbrush in warm water and soap. Rinse well in warm water and dry with a clean cloth. Though less fragile, the same care as for emeralds is advised.

OPAL

Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. You can use warm water with soap. Avoid brushing, chemicals, excessive heat, dry environment. Do not mix with other jewellery. Opal scratches easily.

TANZANITE

Wash with soap and warm water, rinse in warm water and dry with a clean cloth. Do not use a tooth brush. Avoid knocks, acids and direct contact with perfumes . Do not keep in direct contact with other jewellery.

TOPÁZ

Wash with a soft toothbrush in warm water and soap. Rinse well in water and dry with a clean cloth. Avoid contact with other stones.

PEARL

Clean only with a damp cloth. After each use, in particular articles that come into contact with the skin, wipe the pearls with a slightly damp or almost dry cloth. Have the pearls restrung regularly (every two years, for example). Avoid chemicals, acids, even the most mild (e.g., vinegar, lemon juice), chlorinated swimming-pool water, abrasives, knocks, excessive heat, dry environments, contact with other materials. Do not use perfume or lotions directly on the pearls. “In dressing up pearls are the last item to put on and the first to take off”.

CORAL

Clean with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid detergents, cosmetics, chlorinated swimming-pool water, brushing, excessive heat. Avoid contact with other materials.
