At the beginning of the century XIX, when José Pinto Leitão registered the “JPL” hallmark and opened his business on Rua das Flores in Porto in a small shop-workshop.

The typical pieces produced were the “filigree artefacts”, which in the north were taken to parties, sung masses and festivities, the most sought after were earrings, hearts and gold cords.
