The tradition of the popular nativity scene began with St Francis of Assisi, at Christmas 1223, with the representation of the Nativity in the forest of Greccio in Italy. Authorised by the Vatican, the representation with real figures highlighted the nativity scene as a popular work. This public, open-air representation transported the nativity scene from the solemnity of the temple to the familiarity of everyday life and from there to the intimacy of the home. The annual setting up of the Nativity scene becomes a family story and its scope goes beyond individual beliefs.
It is in this context of comprehensiveness and universality, integrated in the 800 years of the representation of the nativity scene, that Leitão & Irmão began the original modelling of the Great Popular Nativity Scene. This is a collectible work, allowing for a personalised representation in its variety.
The 25 pieces, currently available, are part of a vast set already modelled to be published until 2023, thus marking the 800th anniversary of the nativity scene as a work aimed at everyone.
